Audit Your Life To Become Better At What You Do
You audit your company every quarter - every metric, every win, and every loss.
But when was the last time you audited your life?
Not your P&L or ROI, but your purpose, your energy, and your perspective?
I’ve come to believe that the most valuable investment we can make isn’t in a startup or a new piece of technology. It’s in moments that allow you to relish, replenish, and reinvent.
For me this year, that investment was a series of family trips that gave me more insights than any boardroom meeting.
The Audit: Relish & Reinvent
Our first trip was all about speed and precision.
We were in a place where the pace was exhilarating. Navigating winding streets, enjoying the simple pleasure of cafes, and immersing ourselves in a vibrant culture. But the real lessons came from the high-octane experiences: I took my family to a major racing event and witnessed teams operate with breathtaking precision. Every pit stop, every turn – each was a testament to passion, grit, and seamless teamwork.
We also took a quad bike tour and a helicopter ride over a landscape shaped by raw, volcanic power. It taught me that while risk is inherent, controlled risk, with the right plan and equipment, leads to incredible, unforgettable experiences.
It was a powerful reminder that in business and in life, speed and precision are critical for success.
The biggest takeaway, though, was simply relishing the time together. Seeing the joy on my family’s faces was the truest measure of success.
But as a founder, you know relentless speed isn't sustainable. True growth requires balance. And we found that next lesson on our following trip.
The Audit: Replenish
The next trip was a complete change of pace. We went into the wilderness, where the only schedule was dictated by the sun and the animals.
In the vast grasslands, we learned a different kind of lesson. Observing animals in their element, you see how persistence is a quiet, powerful force. They don’t sprint to the finish line: they endure. The great migration, a natural wonder of resilience, showed how creatures adapt and move with changing surroundings – a powerful metaphor for business. You may have the perfect plan, but if you don’t adapt when the market or world changes, you’ll be left behind.
Being in the wild, disconnected from the digital hum, was a profound experience. It reminded me how powerful family is as a core team: supporting one another through every challenge.
That’s where we replenished our energy and refocused on what truly matters.
The Final Audit: Finding Balance
So, what's your takeaway? Audit your own life this week.
Where do you need more speed? Where do you need more stillness? That's where your growth begins.
Success isn’t about living in one extreme or the other. It's about striking a balance between the two.
True leaders don’t just execute; they step back, observe, and learn from life itself. They know that sometimes the greatest business insights don’t come from spreadsheets, but from a helicopter ride or a quiet moment with family.
